Web Push notifications work only if your browser allows the site to send them. If you have subscribed to Web Push from your user dashboard but are not receiving notifications, the most common cause is that browser-level notifications are blocked.
This article shows you how to check and enable notifications across Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and the major operating systems, and how to test that everything is working.
Enable notifications in Google Chrome
The steps below also apply to other Chromium-based browsers like Brave and Arc with minor wording differences.
- Open the site in Chrome
- Click the lock icon or the tune icon to the left of the site URL in the address bar
- Find the Notifications setting
- Toggle Pop-ups/ Notifications to ON
- If you have previously blocked notifications, click Reset permissions and refresh the page
- When the browser asks if you would like to allow notifications, click Allow
Enable notifications in Mozilla Firefox
Firefox keeps notification controls behind its site information panel rather than in an address bar dropdown.
- Open the site in Firefox
- Click the shield or lock icon next to the site URL
- Click Privacy Settings
- Under permissions, click notifications
- Add Website URL whose notifications you wish to receive.
- Refresh the page
Enable notifications in Safari
Edge mirrors Chrome's flow but routes through a Permissions panel instead of an inline toggle.
- Open the site in Safari
- Click the lock next to the site URL
- Click Website Settings
- Under Pop up and Notifications, toggle it to Allow
- Refresh the page
Enable notifications on your operating system
The OS has the final say. If it blocks notifications, the browser cannot override it. Even if the browser allows notifications, your operating system must also allow them.
Windows
- Open Settings > System > Notifications
- Make sure Notifications is turned ON
- Scroll down to the list of apps and confirm your browser is allowed to send notifications
macOS
- Open System Settings > Notifications
- Find your browser in the list
- Make sure Allow notifications is turned ON
Android
- Open Settings > Apps and find your browser
- Tap Notifications
- Turn on Show notifications
Test that Web Push is working
Confirm everything is wired up correctly before you assume there is a deeper problem.
- Log in to the site as a student
- Visit your user dashboard
- The site auto-subscribes you to Web Push
- Ask the site admin to send a test notification
If you still do not see notifications, check that the site appears in your browser's Allowed notifications list and that Do Not Disturb or Focus mode is not enabled on your device.
Important Considerations
- Web Push notifications are not supported in incognito or private browsing windows
- If you've previously dismissed the notification permission popup multiple times, the browser may have permanently blocked notifications for the site. Use Reset Permissions in your browser settings to undo this
- Disabling notifications at the OS level overrides browser settings. If your OS blocks notifications, the browser cannot show them
- Web Push notifications stop working if you are not logged in.
